An exciting new development in Fuchsia culture is the formation of Fuchsia Research International based at historic Margam Park, near Port Talbot in South Wales, where Neath Port Talbot Borough Council, owners of the estate, have invested substantial funds in refurbishing a large Victorian greenhouse that is the "home" to probably the largest and most comprehensive collection of Fuchsia species in the world.
Margam Country Park consists of almost 900 acres (365 hectares) of heavily wooded parkland where herds of deer graze freely around the lakes and wildlife sanctuaries. Dominating the scene is the Castle and within its grounds and gardens is enough to delight any arboriculturalist with its diverse collection of splendid trees from across the world.
The Fuchsia collection is housed in the "Citrus House" and nearby is the magnificent Orangery, a classic example of regency architecture. Ample space is available, either in the Castle or the Orangery for meetings, seminars or conventions.
The interior of the Citrus House has been landscaped to provide a native habitat for both Andean and New Zealand Fuchsia species. Rainwater is recycled to provide waterfalls and a "fogging system". The collection is maintained on a natural basis using an organic regime and biological control of pests.
